Robert Gernetzky, just 55 years of age, died of cancer while still in office, on February 10, 1989. He is buried in Mechanics Ridge Cemetery in Wausau, WI.

Robert Gernetzky was born on July 15, 1933, son of Bernard and Ella (Gruenwald) Gernetzky. He was a 1951 graduate of Wausau High School and graduated from North Central Technical College in 1958. He attended both the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County and UW Madison.
Mr. Gernetzky was elected Marathon County Register of Deeds in 1965 and served in that post until his death in 1989, making him at that time the longest-serving seated elected public official in Marathon County. A Democrat, he was re-elected twelve times and ran unopposed in November 1988.
