PROF. JOSEPH HOPKINS
Past Register of Deeds - Vilas County - Dona Richter (1975 - 1999)
Dona Richter, age 81, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 6, 2014.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Ed; son, Guy (Terry) of Rye, Colo., and daughter Gail (Tom) Kuklinski of Hayward, Wis.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one sister, Margery Payne-Schlinder.
Dona was the youngest of five children. She lost her father and oldest brother when she was 11 years old. They scratched out a living on their homestead farm on Croker Road.
Dona attended Croker School and then
graduated from Eagle River High School as Salutatorian.
Soon thereafter she met Ed Richter. They lived in Fond du Lac for two years before moving back to Eagle River and married on June 16, 1951.
Dona worked for Anderson Insurance Agency before becoming the Vilas County Deputy Register of Deeds for nine years. She ran for and won the office of Register of Deeds and held that position for 24 years, the longest standing Registrar in Wisconsin. She retired on Jan. 3, 1999, and began exploring other life interests.
She found delight working in her beautiful flower gardens at home, visiting guests at their Catfish Lake cabins, and fishing in Michigan.
Dona also enjoyed traveling the world with her family, whom she loved deeply.
Dona will always be remembered for her integrity, strong work ethic, attention to detail and compassion for others.
She was an Eagle River pioneer who lived her life according to old-fashioned common sense and moral values.
Dona will be truly missed by all who knew her.
